It's a type 2 gold one dollar coin minted in the mid 19th Century (this style was only minted between 1854 and 1856). In 1848, large quantities of gold were found in California, and in 1849, the famous gold rush began. Much gold was being transported to the Philadelphia Mint and to the New Orleans Mint during a period when silver dollars were not widely
